Summer Literacy Initiative

The Worcester Summer Literacy Initiative is a privately funded, collaborative effort to prevent summer learning loss among children in grades kindergarten – 4th grade. The program emphasizes practice of literacy skills through fun and engaging summer recreational activities and curriculum. Summer program staff and camp counselors are supported by literacy coaches to embed reading, writing, listening and speaking into the children’s daily routines. Program results since summer of 2010 show that 85 – 90% of children participating in the program avoid summer learning loss.

In summer 2016, a campership program was introduced to support children from low income families to spend the summer in one of these programs.
